Almost 38 here...getting old plays weird tricks on you, and I won’t even go into the clichéd "health problems" stuff. I'm still in decent shape, just a little slower than I used to be. For me, it's that 3 or 4 years can go by and it feels like 6 months. That's terrifying in light of your mortality because you worry it's all wasted. As you get older, pay increases, promotions, life events, and all your other milestones tend to slow WAY down. It's eerie. I'm talking eerie on the level of "Matthew McConaughey just stepped back on the spaceship and 30 years has gone by" kind of weird.

I’ve got a few months on you. It does fly by. I do my best to make moments last and make lasting memories, especially with the kids. If a person just stays on repeat with work, school, sports practices, watching TV, Facebook, etc., one day just blurs into another and hundreds pass before you know it.

Yep, there's definitely a balance between the need for routine and getting stuck in a rut. The weird irony to my comment is that days can seem incredibly long sometimes — like 3 or 4 days in one. But then you look down at your kids and see how quickly they've grown (the old mantra about how quickly it goes by). It's like some kind of timewarp.

Our oldest is 9, just finishing 3rd grade, and I know in an instant he’ll be a teenager. Very important years between here and there, for sure.

I do like the routine of a paycheck, fwiw, but it definitely can make one complacent if you let it. I aspire to do something meaningful and beneficial each day. I hate days I waste by just going to work and back and then spending the evening mostly in front of the TV or computer. I try to combat that by taking the kids and dogs on a hike, going out for a baseball game or other event, working on a creative project or something that needs to be done around the house, playing a board game, etc. In my experience, the more “real” I can make each day, the better I feel about how I’m spending the hours/days/years I’ve been given.

+1000. Ours are 6 and 3 and we’re a very “experience”-based family. As many day trips or events as possible, even when it’s a PITA or expensive or whatever. I started working from home 3 months ago and it’s been interesting — on one hand, no more mindless commuting; OTOH, too much solitude. I sit here and comment on Jalopnik (etc) and end up feeling like I need to be doing something more useful, but ultimately most regular jobs are just as much about being “on call” as they are about constant productivity. I wish I could just magically switch gears and work on curing cancer 5 minutes at a time. My wife does an amazing job, especially during the summer, of keeping the kids busy with crafts and academic stuff. Keeping kids away from excessive TV and video games has become our latest challenge...

It does. I’ve taught middle school, high school, and college. I’ve found them to not really be all that different. The middle school kids are a lot easier to excite ... and to scare.

We have 9, 7 & 3 (boy, girl, boy), so very similar experiences and challenges. My wife has a very good job that is also only 30 hours per week (in the office), which has been a great thing for our family. I work longer days during the week, but have half-day Fridays, so I’m looking forward to a lot more time with the kids on those days now that they’re out of school.

My wife is crafty, too (and she’s just my type, speaking of ‘86), and we’re both math/science/engineering geeks, so we’re trying to rub that off on them as much as possible.

I’ve never worked from home, but I could see how the lack of interaction with coworkers would be a negative (in most cases, anyway).

I never had cable growing up. Several of my siblings cut the cord and the business model is such a racket, I’ve considered it as well. That said, I do love watching sports, racing and automotive & nature shows with the kids. The screen time thing is a constant struggle, personally and with them. Moderation in everything, I guess.

Maybe we need to have a rule that if the sun’s out and it’s below 90 outside, you can’t be watching TV or playing on the iPad - ha!

Those weather constraints would kill 3-4 months here in AL, so we have to increase the temp to 100, but the YMCA pool definitely gets top billing. I would recommend cutting cable, at least for a month as a test (and if you come back, they'll probably sweeten the deal). We've been off for a little over a year. Once you get used to not turning on the TV for instant gratification, your actual consumption goes down but your enjoyment and flexibility go WAY up. Everyone in the family has different watching habits, but it seems to work for all of us pretty well. Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu, and we use all three pretty equally. Not having commercials is a little odd (for example, I have never, ever seen "Grounded to the Ground"), but you're not really missing anything. For sports, just go to friends or restaurants...

There’s tons of stuff out there, but I’ve never really delved into that youtube stuff. I grew up with it all, so I’ve never really had the need. Basic home maintenance is a good way to learn how to use tools and such. I’d follow the kids interest, and find something to make that relates to that.

Yeah, Tulsa has it’s fair share of hot days, too. Thankfully we have a neighborhood pool a very short walk away.

Thanks for the encouragement to cut cable - maybe I can convince my wife to give it up for a couple months this summer. We did make the intentional decision when we moved into our current house almost 10 years ago that we wouldn’t have a TV in our main family room/kitchen area, which has been good. We have an upstairs den, so it’s always an intentional decision to go up and turn it on. Having a DVR has definitely helped get my personal consumption down as well.

Cool, I forgot you were in Tulsa — I love small and medium sized cities, they're like the best of everything. My folks used to live in SE KS for a couple years, so I flew through there a few times, shopped the malls and stuff. "Load up the car, we're going to Wichita or Tulsa to shop!" Yeah, it was pretty remote...

Haha - it really is a good balance. I love being able to live out almost in a rural setting, in a neighborhood just north of the Arkansas river, but also to have access to all the things that are going on without dealing with terrible traffic or really long drives.

Tulsa’s had a downtown resurgence lately that’s been fun to watch and be a part of. This past weekend was Mayfest, as well as the Blue Dome Arts Festival, as well as the Hop Jam Beer & Music Fest - all downtown within a couple blocks of each other. Very cool to see so many people enjoying themselves and supporting local artists and businesses.

The kids are off with my in-laws this week, so we’re heading out for a ball game (Drillers - Double A) tonight with friends.

Did you ever make it to the Philbrook or Gilcrease museums in Tulsa? Super impressive collections, and now we have a Woody Guthrie museum and Bob Dylan’s archive is coming here, too. Cain’s Ballroom and the Brady Theater both have a lot of history, and the new BOK Center is pretty fantastic and draws big acts.

This is coming, too: http://agatheringplacefortulsa.com/ Largest private donation ever for a public park in the United States!

Okay, I’m off my Tulsa evangelist soapbox - ha!

That’s another thing I love about small cities — everyone loves to share the secrets and details. There’s so much artisan/craft/arts stuff going on in the second tier cities right now, it’s not even funny. And we all benefit from the snobby coastal people overlooking us and keeping the crowds down :D
